The U-shape is a window unit, not a true portable. It sits in the window with the compressor hanging outside. The difference is usually $150-$200, which is the entire price gap between the tiers. The cheap unit isn't cheaper. It's just cheaper upfront, and you pay for it every month on your electric bill.

And if you're in a humid climate, check the bucket before bed. Every single night. A unit that shuts off at 2 AM when the bucket fills is a unit that fails you when you need it most.
