I've spent eighteen years telling people their "12,000 BTU" unit is really a 6,000 BTU unit if they're lucky. I've watched cheap compressors die in a single Phoenix heat wave and I've defended my LG dual-hose like family. So when someone asks about a portable air conditioner for tent camping, I have to stop them right there.

The problem isn't the tent. It's the power.

A tent is not a room. It's a nylon bag with no insulation, no vapor barrier, and a zipper that leaks more air than a single-hose unit's negative pressure pulls in. You're not cooling a space. You're fighting the entire atmosphere. And the units that actually move enough air to make a difference draw 800 to 1,200 watts. That's not a camping battery. That's a generator, or a very expensive solar setup, or a shore power cord at a glamping site.

The best portable air conditioner for tent use is the one you can actually power, which means it's probably not a portable AC at all.

Let me explain before you spend ~$400 on something that will trip a breaker at 2 a.m.

The Zero Breeze Mark 2 is the only real answer for off-grid tent cooling. It's a 2,300 BTU unit that runs on a 24V, 24Ah battery, which gives you maybe 4 to 5 hours at half power. That's enough to get you through the worst of the evening heat, but it won't carry you through a humid August night.

The EcoFlow WAVE 2 is the smarter buy if you already have EcoFlow batteries or solar panels. It's 4,000 BTU, which is almost double the Zero Breeze, and it has a heat pump mode that works for cold nights too. But the battery is integrated, not swappable. When it dies, you're done. You can't just plug in a spare.

The LG LP0621WSR is what I'd bring if I had a generator or shore power. It's a real dual-hose unit with a SACC of 4,500 BTU. It'll cool a tent easily. But it weighs 75 pounds, needs a 500-watt draw, and you have to vent both hoses. That's not camping. That's moving your apartment outside.

And the generic 12V units? I've tested one. It pulled 60 watts and dropped the air temp by 4 degrees at the vent. The tent stayed the same temperature. It's a fan with a cold plate. Don't waste your money.

Battery life

The Zero Breeze Mark 2's battery is rated for 4 to 5 hours at half power. That's the real-world number, not the marketing number. If you run it at full cooling, expect 2.5 to 3 hours. The EcoFlow WAVE 2 gets about 3 hours at max cooling, and about 6 hours at the lowest setting.

Neither is a full night's sleep. You're looking at a unit that cools you to sleep, then dies at 3 a.m. when the tent's already cooled down and the outside temp has dropped. That's actually not a terrible pattern. The worst heat is 7 p.m. to midnight. If you time it right, you can sleep through the worst of it.

But if you're in a climate where it stays 90 degrees at midnight, you're going to wake up sweaty. That's just physics. A battery can only hold so much energy.

Power draw

This is the number that matters. A regular portable AC draws 800 to 1,200 watts. A 12V battery with a 100Ah capacity holds about 1,200 watt-hours. That means a standard portable AC would drain a 100Ah battery in about an hour, assuming perfect efficiency, which you won't get.

The Zero Breeze Mark 2 draws about 240 watts at max cooling. That's a 4 to 5 hour runtime on its internal battery. The EcoFlow WAVE 2 draws about 300 watts at max cooling. Same ballpark.

If you're running off a generator, you need a 2,000-watt unit minimum to handle the startup surge on a regular portable AC. That's a loud, heavy generator that defeats the purpose of camping. A 1,000-watt inverter generator will run the Zero Breeze or the WAVE 2 all night on a gallon of gas.

Venting

This is where most people screw up. You can't just put a portable AC in a tent and close the zipper. The unit needs to exhaust hot air outside, and it needs to pull in air from somewhere. If you're using a single-hose unit, it's pulling air from inside the tent and pushing it outside, which creates negative pressure. That sucks hot air in through every gap in the tent's zippers and seams.

Dual-hose is better, but you're still cutting holes in your tent or running hoses through the door. I've seen people use a piece of plywood with a hole cut in it, wedged into the tent's door flap. It works, but it's ugly and it compromises the tent's weather resistance.

The Zero Breeze and the WAVE 2 both have exhaust hoses that you route through a zipper gap. They're smaller, so they fit better. But you're still going to have a gap in your tent's seal. If it rains, you're going to get wet.

Noise

The Zero Breeze Mark 2 is rated at 52 dB. That's a "jet engine" in my book. The compressor kicks in and it's not subtle. The WAVE 2 is better, rated at 48 dB, but I've seen owners say the compressor cycling is the loudest part.

If you're in a tent, noise matters more than in a room. The walls are thin. The sound bounces around. I've had campers tell me they couldn't sleep with the unit running. That's a real tradeoff. You're trading sleep for sleep, which is a weird equation.
